As the final dog teams begin their last runs along the trail, the Yukon Quest Checkpoints and Dog Drops are slowly closing down. Kyla
Boivin arrived at the Carmacks Checkpoint just after 5:30 pm on
Thursday, officially signalling the closing of Pelly Crossing Checkpoint and the McCabe Creek Dog Drop. Locations along the trail
often keep a final watch on until the last musher is reported to have
arrived safely at the next location down the trail.
Kyla's run
time from McCabe Creek Dog Drop was just over 6 hours, a respectable
run, and following a standard "6 on - 6 off" run-rest schedule. If her
team can work with that schedule for the remaining 177 miles of trail,
they will be in good shape at the Finish Line, and could arrive in
Whitehorse just in time to join the rest of the mushers at the Finish
and Awards Banquet - the same dramatic entrance Boivin made last year
in Fairbanks. Bill Cotter and Ann Ledwidge departed from the Carmacks Checkpoint shortly after Boivin arrived, but that means that the three teams were able to see each other and keep track of where the other two dog teams were. Cotter and Ledwidge appear to be running their teams on very similar schedules, most likely by design as both mushers have been running parallel run-rest patterns since departing from the Scroggie Creek Dog Drop. A quick look at the Race Statistics show Cotter and Ledwidge arriving and departing all locations since Scroggie Creek within 15 minutes of each other. With the next two teams expected to arrive at the Finish Line by 2:00 am Friday, these last three mushers should be the focus of the race for the next day or so.
