The IFSS Mid-Distance World Championships were successfully completed in Cansiglio, Italy, 15-17 February, 2008. There were 22 participants (11 in each class) from 8 different countries. The trail was 39 km long, mostly in the forest. The trail was quite
technical. The driving skills of the mushers were required in many
areas. The Race Marshal limited the number of dogs to 10 due to the
snow conditions (very little snow in some parts). A few drivers fell on
the trail, but none were very seriously injured. All dogs raced without
any incident. The speed of the teams (around 24 km/h on the total
average for the best ones) shows the quality of the training of all
these dogs.

You may remember the ping-pong
diplomacy between the United States and China back in the 1970s. Now, some
South Korean athletes say they have introduced "dog sled diplomacy"
to North Korea, as part of the quest for eventual Korean reunification. VOA's
Kurt Achin heads to a North Korean mountain resort for a look.
This is no ordinary day at the races
for these 80 or so sled dogs. They are making a rare visit to North Korea.

50 In 50 Out - Maclaren River |

The sun was shining brightly
across the Maclaren valley today, when ten sled dog teams lined up on the
Maclaren river bridge for the first mid distance race of the season in Alaska.
The barking of approximately 140 dogs echoed in the brisk -4 below morning.
Mushers made last minute decisions about which dogs needed booties or coats
before hearing the timer yell ‘go, go go!’ Even the pet dogs at this remote
Alaskan lodge quivered with excitement as each team left the starting line,
showing an interest in traveling the trail as well. The laugher and camaraderie
made this event an extremely fun time for everyone attending. All the handlers
and bystanders helped everyone out... It was too much fun, and all to celebrate
the joy of mushing!
