Lance was invited to the annual Palmer State Forest Service open house. He spent the day teaming up with Smokey the Bear, getting the word out about fire safety and prevention. Iditarod fans congratulated Lance on his 2007 race season and took the opportunity to get autographs and photos with Smokey and the famous musher. While there, the crowd got to see the forest service in action, when a call came in that a brush fire at Lake Creek was endangering structures. The crew jumped into full swing, piling needed fire fighting gear into an awaiting helicopter and headed for the Skwentna airport so they could set up a base camp. The fire was under control within 4 hours using a helicopter with bucket drops and a dozen ground crew firefighters. Approximately 10 acres had burnt. Mop up was expected to take a few days.
