A medium day in Alaska, a bit overcast and cool, training for Iditarod
07 is in full swing at GB Jones kennel (newly named Iditarod Trail
Kennel, as the Iditarod Trail runs right through it).
Musher Jones is
physically fit as ever. His marathon runner and mountaineering strength
and agility certainly is evident as he bounds through the dog lot
gathering the team mates, running them to the gangline, harnessing them
and hooking them to the four wheeler's gangline. The dogs are happy and
enthusiastic, psyched up and ready to go. The dogs left behind are
howling in protest. Musher Jones undoes the retainer hook and they are
off like the flying Dutchman. A tornado of claws and trail hardened
pads speeds up the iditarod trail and onto the training course. When
the team returns they look as fresh as they did at the start. They are
amazing and the strength of the young team's energy matches their lead
dog, indefatigable Musher Jones.
His birth date
may classify him as one of the senior mushers, but his physical
appearance and stamina are that of a much younger man. He is top fit
and will give some dog drivers a run for their money in 2007.
