The sun was shining brightly
across the Maclaren valley today, when ten sled dog teams lined up on the
Maclaren river bridge for the first mid distance race of the season in Alaska.
The barking of approximately 140 dogs echoed in the brisk -4 below morning.
Mushers made last minute decisions about which dogs needed booties or coats
before hearing the timer yell ‘go, go go!’ Even the pet dogs at this remote
Alaskan lodge quivered with excitement as each team left the starting line,
showing an interest in traveling the trail as well. The laugher and camaraderie
made this event an extremely fun time for everyone attending. All the handlers
and bystanders helped everyone out... It was too much fun, and all to celebrate
the joy of mushing!
The 14 dog limit race was the first of its type this season, established with short notice following the cancellation of the Sheep Mountain 150, which is traditionally one of the first long distance races of the year. Put on by lodge owners Susie and Alan Echols, and inspired by Iditarod champion Jeff King, 10 mushers participated in the season’s inaugural event. The location of the event, starting at Maclaren River Lodge on the Denali Highway, required participating teams to mush in, since the Denali highway is closed in the winter.
As of 7:00 PM on Saturday night, the results of the race are as follows:
Dave Dicarro 4 hr 38 min 0 sec Sebastian Schnuelle 4 hr 39 min 47 sec Jason Reppert 4 hr 45 min 45 sec Debbie Moderow 4 hr 52 min 20 sec Mike Santos 4 hr 54 min 0 sec Rudy Niggemeier 5 hr 19 min 0 sec Rich Corcoran 5 hr 27 min 0 sec Laird Crow 6 hr 17 min 0 sec Dave Treasure 6 hr 24 min 0 sec Gaetan Pirrad 6 hr 26 min 0 sec Comments (0)
