Mitch Seavey Wins Kusko 01/20/08 23:00 Mitch Seavey from Seward, Alaska crosses the finish line tonight arriving at 20:09:4, to win the 29th running of the Kuskokwim 300. Ramey Smyth followed an hour later at 21:05:12 taking 2nd, Ed Iten 21:53:22, John Baker 22:04:41, Rohn Buser 23:45:55, and Martin Buser 23:53:00. Thirteen mushers remain on the trail and 3 have scratched.
Update: 01/20/08 16:30 Mitch Seavey pushes to the front of the Kuskokwim 300. Ramey Smyth follows in second place. Mushers are expected to cross the finish line sometime this evening.
Three mushers have had to scratched: DeeDee Jonrowe, Jackie Larson & Jessica Klejka. No doubt warm, rainy weather has played a role in this race.
Update 2:30 01/19/08 - RAIN & HIGH WINDS TAUNT KUSKO MUSHERS Paul Gebhart leads in the Kusko 300, Sabastian Schnulle is right behind him, both out of Aniak. Rohn Buser is in 3rd place on his way into Aniak. Weather on this rac is not as kind as the Klondike. Mushers have encounterd high winds. They can expect strong southeast winds along the coast 45 to 55 mph gusting to 70 mph. The coast is reporting mixed rain and snow with visibility from 1 to 2 miles at times. Inland they can expect mostly cloudy skies with light rain and areas of patchy fog. Southeast wind 15 to 25 mph gusting to 35 mph with temperatures in the upper 30s to near 40. Not the best conditions to run dogs in.
The 29th annual Kuskokuim 300 is gearing up for this coming weekend in Bethel, Alaska. Twenty one mushers have signed up. Race starts Friday Jan 18th at 6:30 pm. Mushers signed up to date are: Jackie Larson, Kyle Belleque, Mike Williams Sr, Mike Williams Jr , Myron Angstman , Paul Gebhardt , Jessica Klejka , Mitch Seavey, Jeff King, Dave Decaro, Jim Lanier, Dee Dee Jonrowe, Gerald Riley, David Tresino, Martin Buser, Rohn Buser, Ramy Smyth.
