Charlie (Talkeetna, AK, USA) moved to Alaska from Southern California five years ago to be closer to his older brother. He says, “I sent from surfing to sledding!!!” He was a competitive swimmer for six years while in California. He began mushing in the winter of 2004 because “my brother was running dogs and he gave me a litter of pups.” His brother, Rich Hum, will be a rookie in this year’s Iditarod and he and his brother train together and have a combined kennel. In 2006, Charlie was the Jr. Iditarod Red Lantern winner. He is now a member of the Quassage kids, which is a student guide group whose goal is to show other students how to take control over their education. They work through the Quality School Model and R.I.S.C., Reinventing Schools Coalition. Charlie is home schooled through the Chugach Extension Program and will be using his training, racing, planning and dog care to meet curriculum requirements. “So,” says Charlie, “While I am out on a great two day 100 mile dog run, I will be actually doing my school work. He enjoys swimming, fishing, bike riding, softball and reading. He plans to go to college with an interest in archeology or anthropology and will “probably” continue mushing. Comments (0)
