Forty three Iditarod rookies are getting a crash course this weekend on what to expect for the 2007 Iditarod at the mandantory rookie meeting. Seasoned mushers like Jeff King & Vern Halter took the stage to share their racing knowledge with the new mushers.
Jeff King demonstrated his latest gear innovations and how his shorter harnesses improve how the sleddogs perform. Vern Halter shared some tips along the trail and what to expect on this year southern route.
UPDATED: Audio interviews with Jon Korta and Mike Suprenant.
Musher Bryan Bearss, an Iditarod rookie himself last year shared his experiences with the group. "What ever happens out there" he explained, "is your responsibility. If you are having problems, don't blame the team. It's your fault, suck it up and make it right. Stay focused and you will get to Nome. If you make a mistake, get over it and correct it. Have fun", he smiled.
Seasoned race veterinarian Stu Nelson, Diana Moroney from the Iditarod Airforce a past veteran Iditarod musher herself, running the last great race ten times and race marshal Mark Nordman also gave their advice, answering a variety of concerns. The rookies were all ears asking questions and getting good answers.
All and all the Iditarod has come a long way in preparing potential new comers for this thousand mile trip. A very informative weekend brings them one step closer to Nome. Sunday they all take a trip to Martin Buser's kennel to soak up some more good advice.
