Pretty hard to "follow the teams" when the updates are practically non existent. I realize that updates rely on a whole chain of communication, ham radio, cell phone etc and all of this is handled by volunteers. But it can and is done in a timely fashion by many other races. No excuses- this race will never grow and prosper if this is an example of it's organization.
Just an FYI, the updates can't be posted because of a lack of internet connection in Paxton, alas. They're trying.
I agree with Janet. There are sat phones, etc. Make a call to someone who can post it online. Send a carrier pigeon...something...! It's too frustrating for friends and family at home waiting for information and hitting refresh every two seconds when updates are promised.
If there is no internet connection in Paxson, then don't promise updates. Certainly someone knew before the race that they couldn't get online in Paxson.....
Gee, you wonder why anyone bothers to VOLUNTEER to put on a race. I'm sure the race will be a success and grow depending on how well the trail is set up and how musher friendly it is. Not whether or not they sprung for the cost of a Sat phone to provide updates to the Internet.
Oh for crying out loud. I'm not slamming the volunteers. All we're saying is don't say they'll be updates when there isn't. I understand internet is sketchy at Paxson. Been there, done that. BUT, I did here Theresa's audio track and did appreciate that. I'm just wondering where Julie Estey is. Is she in? Did she scratch? What's happening? With all the sponsorship and hype around this race, what is going on out there? Yup, I guess I'll just have go run and/or cover it myself next year. I would like to say that I have enjoyed this website and know that Theresa is a hard-working mushing enthusiast. So, for all you do, thank you.
| Well, we did our best and sometimes things go wrong. We had Sat phones, we had radio phones, we had back up dial up but Paxson is in one of those dead zones, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't and then all those "REFRESH" hits every two seconds crashed the page. The host just wasn't ready for that many people visiting this small web site. We were working between 2 lodges, I snowmachined between the 2 (42 miles one way) to get info for the site. When I was at Paxson, I was using the Paxson Lodges ONLY telephone line to do updates and they have a business to run so once it crashed the third time I had to give in and quit imposing on them. I called ACS to see if they could help get us a toll free line to use but they agreed Paxson was a dead zone. I tried hooking up my cell phone to no avail. Our personal Sat phone which we have used in very remote spots in alaska also did not work. I posted my own cell phone number on the dogsled.com site so folks could and did call me for the most current update, if that's not enough then I give up. I certainly appreciate those that posted support of our efforts. I won't even begin to tell you how much it cost to cover these races out of our own pockets and I'll be the first one to tell you I was terribly disappointed and frustrated NOT to get the info out to all of you in a timely manor.
