With the lack of snow plaguing most of the state of Alaska, one sled dog race after another has been force to cancel, leaving mushers scrambling to find good training grounds. The Gin Gin 200 is one of the few survivors, with trail conditions fair to good. Twenty four mushers have signed up to date. "The trail is good enough to hook down a 12-dog team almost everywhere. The mountain loop has 2-3’ of snow cover with some windblown areas on the big lakes. The loop trail out of Maclaren was icy with overflow in spots; we will look at the Maclaren again this weekend and reroute where/if necessary." says race coordinator John Schandelmeier. New to the GIN GIN this year is a men's division and an extra 80 miles added to the trail, making it a 200 mile race and a Quest/Iditarod qualifier. A $7,500 purse plus prizes are set for this 3rd annual race. The 2007 Gin Gin 200 will take place December 28-30. Spectators can watch the race from Paxson Lodge or snow machine into Maclaren Lodge.
