On the eve of the first Cantwell Classic, the snowfall is heavy and the anticipation is high. Willow is expected to get up to 12 more inches of snow tonight. The race marshal talked of blowing snow on the trail and glare ice on the river. Approximately 10 trail breakers are busy reworking the trail tonight to keep the race on track. While the snow is keeping the event organizers busy tonight, I suspect that most are glad the temperatures are warmer than it was this time last week! The 12-dog race, an approved Iditarod qualifier, runs 200 miles from Cantwell to Maclaren River and back, for a $5,000 purse. Our coverage begins Friday morning when will do our best to bring you some audio updates and images from the start of the race later in the day. Stay tuned.
