Gatt & Marrs take the 2008 Cantwell Classic 

Hanns Gatt from Whitehorse wins the 2008 Cantwell Classic. His leaders were Timpany, M.coy, Tushai, and  Tivek. Handling winds and bone chilling temperatures made for another tough year running this 200 mile mid distance race.

Wade Marrs was the first into Cantwell in the 70 mile  Junior Cantwell Classic with an arrival time of 4:53 pm. With Ava Linder one minute behind him. Wade is from Knik, Alaska and has been mushing for 10 years.

Update:01/12/08 13:30 Most mushers have arrived at the Big Su for their mandantory 1 hour layover. The 14 junior mushers have started the 70 mile Jr Cantwell Classic and should finish about the same time as the senior mushers. Aaron Burmiester, Hans Gatt, Dider Moggia, Judy Currier, Jessie Royer, Debbie Moderow, John Stewart , Jennifer Kemper and Ramey Brooks are the front runners in this years Cantwell Classic.  If they leave at the allowed departure times from the Big Su Checkpoint, about a 4 hour run to the finish line in Cantwell, any of them could grab first place.

Wind Chill Advisory may play into race:  A wind chill advisory has been posted for the Cantwell area and may play a big part in the progress of this race. Bone chilling temperatures make even the simpliest chores difficult at best for mushers. Feeding, watering, even putting booties on with these temperatures is a laboring task. The forecast for tonght is partly cloudy with flurries. Lows 5 to 20 below. North to northwest wind 5 to 20 mph with local gusts to 40 mph along the Alaska Range. Wind chills 30 to 50 below zero north of Talkeetna and through channeled areas.

UPDATE: Saturday 10 am

A good race is underway in Cantwell, Alaska. Mushers are packed tight together in this 200 mile race from Cantwell to Maclaren Lodge . Hard, smooth packed trails are allowing mushers to move fast. Mushers will go out of Maclaren Lodge in revervse order.There is a one hour mandatory layover at the Big Su Checkpoint, plus their start time differential. The first team to Cantwell finish line is the winner. A good dozen mushers are within minutes of each other at this time. This could be an exciting photo finish.

Update: Friday 10 am - The Cantwell Classic 200 started this morning at 10 am in Cantwell, Alaska. Temperatures were a brisk 5 below zero with a light snowfall. The race runs along the Denali Highway to the Maclaren River Lodge and back. Forty two mushers have signed up to run this mid distance race, among the names are Iditarod champion Martin Buser & his son Rohn. Six junior mushers have signed up for the 70 mile junior  Cantwell Classic. This years race is honoring Emmitt Peters.
