Castle Hill, NSW AUSTRALIA
Age 32, Stephen Carrick was born in Germany and raised in NSW in Australia. He became interested in mushing dogs in 199 after handling for Australian musher Marty Karrow in several races in New Hampshire. His initial interest quickly grew and within a few weeks, Steve was in Alaska working as an Iditarod volunteer in the phone room during the race. That experience gave him the opportunity to meet many interesting Alaskan personalities, including 1984 Iditarod champion, Dean Osmar. Dean introduced Steve to his son, Tim, whom Steve has handled for ever since. Like so many people who visit Alaska, Steve was soon addicted to the unique Alaskan lifestyle. Steve says he now lives a dual life of “constant winters.” He spends six months of each year in Australia during the southern hemisphere’s winter where he works as a project manager, frantically trying to raise enough money to return and enjoy another Alaskan winter, and, of course, the Iditarod.
