Point Hope, Alaska
Russell
Lane, a 32 year old Inupiaq Eskimo, has lived in Point Hope all his life.
He hunts year round and is employed as a heavy equipment operator seasonally.
His family had dog teams out of necessity until the late 1960's or early
1970's but he says, "I wanted to carry on our traditions, heritage
and culture. I have self taught myself mostly but lately have learned
a lot from other mushers."
He actually started mushing in 1989 and has been interested
in running the Iditarod since he started mushing.. He is running the Iditarod
to encourage the work ethic for children and others by striving to be
a positive example and demonstrate that goals can be accomplished sober
and drug free once you've put your mind to it.
He ran both the Kobuk 220 and Kobuk 440 in 1997 and
1998. A member of the volunteer search rescue he enjoys mushing, being
a hunter/whaler and an Eskimo dancer.
Russell is married and has a stepson, Adam, age 14.
