Worsthorne, England
Roy Monk was born in England in June 1938. Trained as an organic chemist, Roy is the head of a pigment manufacturing company in Lancashire.
Roy began mushing in 1980 and became interested in the Iditarod in 1984 from video's and magazines. In 1986, he came to Alaska to learn more about racing in the Iditarod. In 1990, he ran his first Iditarod with a team of leased dogs. His team for 2000 is comprised from descendants of that 1990 team and the squad is largely Alaska bred, with a very strong Redington basis. The prime reason for entering in 2000 is a denial of age! To be competitive is important, "but the pleasures of the trail and being with my dogs is reward enough."
Roy and his wife Leslie have 5 children and 7 grandchildren. His hobbies include farming and restoration of antiques. Comments (1)
