Mike Williams, 47, is a Yupiaq Eskimo born and raised in Akiak, Alaska. After high school at Chemawa in Oregon, he was drafted into the US Army, stationed in South Korea. Upon his return, he worked in Bethel as a mental health counselor. Mike says he's been involved in public service since 19674.
Mike's been mushing since he was very small and says the main reason he runs the Iditarod is to promote healthy lifestyles, sobriety and quality education for our children and opportunities. His dogs come from the original Akiak breed and he has some dogs from Atla, Butcher, Boulding, Champaine and others.
Mike is a member of the Alaska State Board of Education, the Alaska Intertribal Council and the Alaska Humanities Forum. He enjoys karate, reading, hunting and fishing. Mike is married to Maggie. The have five children, Ted, 23, Sheila, 20, Shawna, 18, Mike Jr., 18, and Christine, 2.
