Lance Mackey, son of 1978 Iditarod champion, Dick Mackey, was born in Alaska in 1970. Coming from a dog mushing family, Lance says he has been mushing “since birth” and has wanted to run the Iditarod since he turned 18 He ran the Jr. Iditarod several times and stopped mushing for a number of years. He started racing again three years ago and has run a number of sprint and mid distance races since then. He was the ’99 rookie of the year for the Kenai Peninsula Sled Dog Racing Association.
“I’m in great shape for the first time ever. My dogs are all very young, fast, and like me, inexperienced. I come from a family of Iditarod champs. My goal is to be the next Mackey to become a champ (Lance’s brother, Rick, was the 1983 Iditarod champion.) and I won’t quit until I do. This year I want to get as many pups to Nome as possible so next year we can race. This year is practice.” Lance has been a commercial fisherman for 14 years. He’s married and the father of Amanda, 12, and Brittney, 10. He says his hobby is collecting other people’s old junk. Comments (0)
