Chugiak, Alaska
Born
in Washington, DC, in 1940, and grew up in Fargo, North Dakota. After
completing his medical degree in 1967, he moved to Alaska to serve in
the United States Public Health Service and "to have an adventure."
He has worked as a pathologist for 30 years and is a
member of the American Medical Association, Col. Am. Paths, and the Iditarod
Trail Committee.
Jim started mushing in 1978 through the influence of
Iditarod veterans Ron Gould and Jerry Riley. Jim says, "I'm just
a dumb doctor who wants to hook up 16 white dogs and head down the trail
again, before I get another day older!"
Jim is married and the father of four children,
Margaret, Kim, Willy and Jimmy. He lists his hobbies and interests as
music, mushing, commercial fishing, hunting and raising kids.
