Kotzebue, AK
Born in Alaska in 1953 and raised in Browerville, Minnesota, and came back to Alaska for college. Ed says he knew from a young age that Alaska was the only place for him, the Alaska that had no roads.
Ed began mushing in 1979 and became attracted to racing when he finished second, minutes behind Herbie Nayukpuk in the 1985 Kobuk 220. Since then he has raced quite a bit in the Northwest Arctic. He says he enjoys getting around by dog team and by racing, he can justify the improvements and additions he makes to his kennel.
Ed says, "For my family, running dogs is a way of life. The highlight of our year is our winter camping trip. My children help raise our puppies and travel hours in their mom's sled while she trains the yearlings. Where we live, there are no roads. We travel all winter on well marked trails. Nothing beats stopping by the side of the trail to talk with someone who remembers when dog teams were the only way to get around." Ed sees the Iditarod as a chance for his dogs to compete against the best long distance sled dog teams and gives him an opportunity to excel at a sport he enjoys. Comments (0)
