Willow, Alaska Bob Chlupach, 52, was born and raised in northern Iowa. He majored in Fish and Wildlife Biology and minored in Botony at Iowa State University. During college he worked summers in Nebraska but more often in Alaska. The day after his graduation he was in Alaska. He was attracted to the State at that time because it was a leader in fisheries research projects. In the mid ‘70’s, he and his wife, Robin, became involved with sled dogs, more specifically Siberians. The late Darrell Reynolds encouraged him to enter his first Iditarod in 1977. He has also run several Fur Rendezvous races and North Americans. Bob says, “I’ve never been at the very top but we did, however, have some very respectable performances, but to this day more than that, I’ll always remember those few ‘special’ runs whether they were in racing or simply a training run.” The Chlupach’s haven’t had Siberians for all the years he’s been racing but he says “anyone who know me knows I’ve always had a special place for them.” Bob has retired after 20 years as a fisheries biologist and has worked as a fly fishing guide for eight years and a tour boat captain for two years. He is on the Board of Directors of the Aurora Dog Mushers. Bob’s wife Robin has operated a custom sewing shop for 26 years, making parkas, hats, mittens, harnesses and other related sled dog equipment. Their daughter Melissa will get her master’s this spring in sports nutrition. Comments (0)
