Nenana, AK
Bill Cotter, 53, started out on the other side of the
country in New Hampshire. After graduating in 1970 from Suffolk College
in Boston, where he majored in history, Cotter traveled with three friends
on a cross-country trip ending in Alaska. The friends went back to Boston;
Cotter stayed. A stint as a volunteer during the 1973 Iditarod led Cotter
to become a competitor.
In addition to competing in the Iditarod 14 times, Cotter
has also participated and placed first in other races including the Yukon
Quest. "There is nothing as rewarding to me as working in partnership
with my dog team to tackle the elements," says Cotter. He and Liller,
Cotter's wife, who he says is as integral to the success of their kennel
as the dogs themselves, live on a "dog farm" in Nenana. A kennel
owner for the last 25 years, Cotter says in his spare time he enjoys biking
and fishing.
