There is a newly formed non-profit organization dedicated to using the adventures of racing sled dogs to promote
awareness and raise funding for the support of children with disabilities and their families. It's called "The Sled Dog Fund, Inc."
Donations to The Sled Dog Fund,
Inc., are used to support clinical research on developmental disabilities, fund hospital programs, directly assist parental
education programs and to sponsor individual disabled children who wish to compete in adventure races of any kind.

There is a new book circulating around the dog mushing community that has fans praising June Price, the author. It could easily be called " A Tourist Guide to the Iditarod".
This books details events surrounding what makes the "Last Great Race" tick. It helps the arm chair musher fully understand the work that goes into making the Iditarod race a success. I often wondered when fans show up to watch the start of the Iditarod each year, how much exposure do they really get. Do they know about the mushers banquet, the restart, the summer picnic?
This book answers all your questions and opens your eyes to the "behind the scenes" in the mushing world. A great find.
Available at Amazon for $16.95.

Duluth, MN USA, October 10, 2007 – The partnership between Special Olympics Minnesota and sled dog sports (P.A.W.S. – Promoting Abilities with Sleddogs) kicked off its third season with a Steering Committee planning conference aimed at expanding its program and soliciting more participants.
P.A.W.S. is a program aimed at opening up sled dog sports to athletes with intellectual disabilities. A three-pronged approach, it combines competition with education and recreation to promote a healthy life style through sled dog sports. At the core of the program is the pairing of people with intellectual disabilities, many of whom are Special Olympics athletes, with mushers, who act as mentors and use their dogs and equipment. The first year of P.A.W.S. was capped with a race event in connection with the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon in Duluth, MN USA.

Meiers Lake Roadhouse has closed. Galen Atwater, founder and proprietor of Meiers Lake Roadhouse, passed away in late September; his Lodge has closed indefinitely. Galen was a staunch supporter of sled dog racing; he was one of the original checkpoints on the Copper Basin 300. He featured the start of the 2003 Denali Dash and has served as start and finish for the Gin Gin 120 of the past two seasons. We will miss Galen, our supporter, our friend and neighbor. The closure of Meiers Lake has necessitated some changes for the Gin Gin 200.
